About
As part of the Science Year 2023, themed „Our Universe,“ the MS Wissenschaft ship, a 600-square-meter floating science center touring through Germany, offered a deep dive into the mysteries of space. For this special occasion we upgraded our existing “ErUM VR” application that we had developed and realized for the BMBF and DESY in 2021.
Originally designed to allow users to interactively explore the world of matter, particles, and the universe—the core areas of DESY—across three scenarios, this application has now been enhanced with a universe update specifically for the Science Year 2023.

Experience the Universe
in VR
Universe VR update
In the upgraded experience, users begin their journey in the Atacama Desert, taking in a breathtaking view of a telescope during an impressive flight. They then embark on an exploration of the Milky Way, discovering red giants and planets before witnessing the birth of a new planet, Beta Pectoris B. The adventure continues with an interactive landing on a neighboring exomoon, where visitors use a drill to collect a rock sample to determine the planet’s potential for life. After receiving their results, they conclude the experience with a return flight to Earth.
Interactive telescope
Additionally, we’ve developed an interactive telescope that enables users to discover the universe through various telescope perspectives. When users select a telescope, the telescope view switches to show the sky in a gamma ray view, for example. Previously undiscovered galaxies or star formations now become visible and can be selected and discovered as interactive hotspots on the telescope screen.
